Sparrow Drive at Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park: January 29th, 2011

On my day off last week, I attended a “sparrow” drive at Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park. This event was organized by the park biologist, Paul Miller. Birders and biologists from all over the region joined in, and Sam, Melanie, and Charles, who just started work on Scrub Jays at the bird lab at Archbold Biological Station, working for Shane Pruitt, were able to tag along.
A sparrow drive is exactly what it sounds like. A long line of mist nets are set up, acting as a wall that sparrows cannot fly through. After the nets are set up, a line of volunteers walks out into the prairie (or salt marsh, as Alex and I did with Fletcher Smith last summer in Virginia), around the target area to be flushed. Two volunteers each take an end of a rope; sometimes the rope can have plastic jugs or cans on it, to make more noise as it drags (this method is also used to flush rails and sometimes ducks). For this sparrow drive, we had more people than rope, so we formed a kind of arc around the target area. While the two people at the end of the rope walked forward, the large line of volunteers walked behind the dragging rope, making lots of noise (clapping and yelling), flushing any bird in front of the rope towards the net. On this sparrow drive, we had so few sparrows that when one flushed, we were able to target the area it flew in to, and make sure it flushed and didn’t let the rope pass over it. We were targeting Bachman’s, Henslow’s, and Grasshopper Sparrows, which can all be very secretive, and would usually rather run and hide in the grass, or take short low flights, instead of flushing long distances. When the line of people and rope reached the nets, the birds had nowhere else to go but into the mist nets where they were trapped. In total, we caught 3 Bachman’s Sparrows (Aimophila aestivalis), 1 Grasshopper Sparrow (Ammodramus savvanrum), in addition to 1 Eastern Meadowlark (Sturnella magna). Even though 4 sparrows doesn’t seem like a lot, at this time of year, it would be hard to see these two species otherwise.

Bachman’s Sparrow is found year-round in Florida and the Gulf Coast states to Louisiana and Texas, and as far north as North Carolina. Its summer range extends slightly north into Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, and Kentucky, but it is declining, especially in the northern part of its range. In the south it prefers pine woods with a palmetto scrub, but it is also found in habitats of only palmetto, like the habitat at the Kissimmee Prairie, where trees are very sparse. In flight, it shows a longer tail than other sparrows of its size. Its breast is fairly plain, buffy on top but mostly white on its belly, and streaking on its head, back and wings is reddish brown and gray. It shows a rufous crown and rufous eye stripe.  We caught 3 Bachman's Sparrows in total.

There are four subspecies of Grasshopper Sparrows in North America, three of which are listed as species of concern. The Florida subspecies, floridanus, is listed as endangered and is nonmigratory. Like most species with this label, it suffers from habitat destruction and must deal with the problems associated with having only a few remaining disjunct populations. The Kissimme Prairie is one of its last strongholds. In summer in the east, one can find the eastern subspecies, pratensis.  In the west, two other subspecies in occur, including perpallidus (found across much of the west and mid-west) and ammolegus (found only in south east Arizona, south west New Mexico, and northern Mexico). They can be found in grasslands, hayfields, or prairies in the summer throughout North America.  The eastern subspecies winters in the south and south east (Gulf Coast, including the Kissimme Prairie and other areas of Florida). The Grasshopper Sparrow is one of our smallest sparrows, and has a short tail distinctive in flight. It has a distinctive eye ring and yellow lores, with a buffy breast and red, gray, and black streaks on its back and wings. It has a white median crown stripe, and the color of this is variable in the different subspecies. It has an overall “cute” appearance with a large head and small body. In Florida, Grasshopper Sparrows have very specific habitat requirements (dry prairie with low shrubs/grass and saw palmetto) and depend on specific land management practices, such as prescribed burning (ideally natural fires would create this habitat). At the Kissimme Prairie, it has been observed that about 2.5 years after a prairie has been burned, Grasshopper Sparrows leave in search of a younger, more suitable prairie.

Eastern Meadowlarks are found year-round in most of the south, mid-west, and east, and expand northward into the northeast and northern mid-west in the summer. They are a fairly common species in open grasslands, but in general are declining, along with most other grassland bird species. They eat mainly seeds and insects, but there was a record a few years ago of a Meadowlark attacking and eating a mouse! (insert link). They can be distinguished from Western Meadowlarks by song (although Eastern Meadowlarks have variable songs), and by the amount of white on the outer rectrices (Eastern Meadowlarks have more extensive white on their outer tail feathers than Weatern Meadowlarks). Our Meadowlark appeared to be female (larger than male) and seemed to be molting into its brighter more contrasting breeding plumage.

Very worn tail of Eastern Meadowlark, will be molted last. Eastern Meadowlarks show thicker black barring on all feathers, most noticeable in tail feathers. Western Meadowlarks show thinner black barring (see this link for more difference between the two species).

Grassland sparrow habitat is becoming more and more scarce throughout most of the United States, so it is extremely important to monitor populations through banding and long term population studies. Sparrow drives are currently being done all over Florida in the next two months before breeding season begins. Kissimmee Prairie State Park represents a refuge and retreat for many of Florida’s rare and endangered species. It is home to a few breeding pairs of Crested Caracara (two pairs of which were nest building last weekend), a very diverse array of butterflies, insects and arthropods, and unique dry prairie plant species. It is also the last known nesting area for the now extinct Carolina Parakeet.

Reward for information on Whooping Crane Killings

In December, three DAR (Direct Autumn Relase) Whooping Cranes were shot in Georgia.  These birds were part of a reintroduction effort started by the International Crane Foundation, and were on migration between Wisconsin and Georgia, when they were found dead by hunters.  The cranes were thought to be shot sometime before December 30th.  If you have any information about this horrendous crime, please contact U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Special Agent Terry Hasting at 404-763-7959 and/or Georgia Department of Natural Resources 24hr. TIP  Hotline at 1-800-241-4113.  The reward for information is now up to $20,800.  Whooping Cranes are a critically endangered species, and less than 400 remain in existence. 

Donations in response to this crime are best channeled into the reward money, as it is very likely that someone knows who did this.

Crested Caracaras in Florida

Crested Caracaras are members of the family Falconidae (which includes other species like Kestrels, Merlins and Hobbies, and the Peregrine Falcon). Recently, through genetic work, it was discovered that Falconidae is more closely related to parrots than other raptors. There are 11 known species of caracara, one of which is extinct. Crested Caracara is the only one found in the United States.

Caracara’s are named for the sound they make when they throw their head back in a “rattle” call. They are well known as Mexican Vultures or Mexican Eagles, and are found on the official seal of Mexico (with a snake in their talons). Caracaras eat carrion and also live prey, and aren’t above snatching prey from other species. I’ve seen them snatch prey from Cattle Egrets and Wood Storks, and have also seen disputes (likely territorial) between caracaras and Great Blue Herons, Osprey, Peregrine Falcons, Red-tailed Hawks, Red-shouldered Hawks, and Bald Eagles.

Caracaras have very large territories. In Florida, this territory is usually centered around clumps of cabbage palm on cattle ranches. Crested Caracaras nest mostly in Cabbage Palm, but have been known to nest in other tree species.

Population numbers of Crested Caracaras in Florida have been dropping in the last hundred years, mainly as a result of habitat destruction (combined with development pressure and road-kills). When ranch lands are converted to housing developments, factory sites, or large-scale agriculture, the Cabbage Palms that Caracaras depend on are cut, and pairs are displaced off their breeding territories. Pairs do seem to mate for life, and once a territory is established, the pair will likely remain on it for the rest of their lives. A 16 year old caracara was recently recovered as a road kill, and it had moved only 9 km from where it was banded as a sub adult.

You may see caracaras on the edge of cities or developments. My guess is that these are birds that have been displaced by development elsewhere, or they are birds that are attempting to hold out on their historic territories until the habitat can no longer meet their needs. Caracaras may actually appear to benefit initially from construction; they are attracted to recently burned areas, recently cleared ditches, and recently cleared brush piles, where they are likely to find a large concentration of lizards, frogs and bugs to eat. But these benefits are only temporary; if the Cabbage Palms that they depend on are taken out, the birds will likely abandon their territories in search of more suitable habitat.

The project I am working on seeks to find out specifically how breeding pairs of Crested Caracara react to large-scale development on and near their territories. Many of our focal pairs nesting areas are not directly on proposed project sites, but are on the edge of these lands. Because caracaras have such large territories, which do overlap on these project sites, one can hypothesize that home range will either shift or shrink, depending on suitability of surrounding lands. If caracaras are particularly sensitive to a certain type of development (that is, if their Cabbage Palms/nesting trees are cut and/or their foraging/roosting areas are destroyed or decreased to some level), it is likely they will move on, to “greener pastures.” Unfortunately for a caracara, greener pastures are few and far between in Florida. And, if they do find such an ideal land (cattle ranch), they most likely won’t be welcomed with the label of an endangered species.

While there are laws and regulations that govern the extent of development allowed, I can only hope that private landowners can continually recognize the importance of this species, and work towards common goals of land preservation and stewardship. For a species with such a small range in Florida, a displaced caracara has only so many places it can retreat to.

Christmas Bird Count, Avon Park Florida: January 6, 2011

Yesterday, I participated in the Christmas Bird Count at Avon Park through Archbold Biological Station.  Jen, Alex, and I joined Reed and Shane who work at Archbold, and started birding at 5:45 am in the dark.  We called for Eastern Screech Owl, and didn't hear any, but Reed and Shane each heard Screech Owls later in the day.  We also heard Barred Owls calling at a few different sites, in the dark and during daylight hours.  Some of the good birds we found were a Purple Gallinule, a Peregrine Falcon, a Northern Waterthrush, and a flock of Horned Larks, the last of which has not been recorded at Avon Park before.  My favorite birds of the day were Yellow-throated Warbler, which we saw a handful of, and Brown-headed Nuthatches, which were at a few of the sites we stopped.  The complete checklist, compiled by Alex, is at the bottom of the page after photos (click for larger photos).  Visit Alex's website to see his photos.

Status of Eastern Migratory Population of Whooping Cranes

Since leaving my job with the International Crane Foundation, I've encountered many people in my travels who ask how the Whooping Cranes of the Eastern Migratory Population (all reintroduced cranes) are doing.  The fact is that the current status of this population is grim, and as much as I'd like to portray optimism and hope for the future of this flock, there are no scientific facts or research publically available that support this outlook.  The total number of cranes that make up the EMP now stands at 99 individuals.  These cranes have continual problems regarding nest failtures, and scientific and unbiased research from outside the project is needed to get to the bottom of these issues.  Simply adding more and more Whooping Cranes to this flock without understanding these nesting issues seems ethically questionable. From a biological and therefore unbiased stand point, I would strongly caution against releasing large or increased numbers of Whooping Cranes into the wild.  There is no need to take advantage of the weak status of the flock as an argument to increase its size, for questionable motives.  Now, more than ever, reasons for wanting to increase the number of cranes released should be investigated.  Currently, adult survival seems to be too low to sustain a flock, and it may be that there are a combination of poorly researched issues that contribute to this. 

In conclusion, I want more than anything for this flock to succeed, but these cranes are facing biological issues after release that are deeply affecting their survival and nest success.  Please encourage members of WCEP (the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership http://www.bringbackthecranes.org/) to continually re-evaluate the status of this flock. I can only hope that they realize that quality is better than quantity.  A vital aspect of conservation and reintroduction programs is knowing when to recognize failure.  Despite the oblivious optimism that is continually portrayed to the public, these biological and ethical issues exist and it is critical that they are addressed.
