On June 19th, I drove through Cibola NWR and a few surrounding areas looking for cuckoos. While we have many cuckoos at a few of our sites, it is always possible that a few are sneaking around at other sites, potentially nesting. I travelled to three different sites early in the AM, where I sat and listened for a cuckoo contact call. Cuckoos make a contact call when they do a nest exchange or announce one, and do call from their nest, so any bearing on a call may lead to a nest. I didn't hear any cuckoos, though, and none responded to my broadcasts, but I did find a few other good birds while out searching.
Greater Roadrunner
Bell's Vireo
Ash-throated Flycatcher
